Philips i999 Gets Certified; 2K Display, 3GB Of RAM And A Fingerprint Scanner In Tow

Many, many companies all around the world are manufacturing smartphones these days. Some of those OEMs are very well known all over the world, like Samsung, LG, Motorola and HTC for example, others, not so much. Well, there's actually a third category here in which belong the companies which are very well known but not for manufacturing smartphones. Philips is definitely such a company, this Holland-based company has been around since 1891 and has been manufacturing all sorts of tech stuff ranging from TVs, stereos all the way to walkmans and smartphones.

Philips doesn't exactly release smartphones that often and are definitely not very popular in that segment, but the company is very persistent. The last two notable devices by the company were announced last year, and it's time for the company to announce something new. One of their devices actually got certified by TENAA (China's equivalent to the FCC) quite recently, the Philips i999. This is actually a high-end device and will be the company's new flagship. The Philips i999 features a 5.5-inch QuadHD (2560 x 1440) display along with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of non-expandable internal storage. This handset is powered by a quad-core SoC clocked at 2.5GHz, but the listing doesn't reveal which chip are we talking about here. The 20-megapixel camera (+dual LED, dual tone flash) will be located on the back of Philips i999, and an 8-megapixel snapper will be available up front. This phone will ship with Android 4.4.3 KitKat pre-installed with some of Philips' additions on top of Google's operating system.

Interesting enough, this handset will also sport a rear-facing fingerprint scanner, something that more and more smartphone OEMs include in their smartphones. This device will measure 153 x 76 x 8.2mm and weigh 160 grams. If you take a look at the gallery below the article you'll be able to take a good look at the device / check out its design. As you can see, the phone has relatively narrow side bezels and three capacitive buttons below the display: back, home and multitasking, respectively. The Philips i999 will also offer 4G LTE connectivity, in case you were wondering. We still don't know when will this thing launch, but that will quite probably happen soon considering the phone already went through the certifications process.
