Google's efforts to integrate search capabilities into many of their services and applications seem to be growing, with a new report from The Information stating that someone familiar with Google plans has mentioned there will be a new Google Dialer on the way, which may have similar features to the official dialer app already available for stock Android devices. If you use a Nexus device or another device running on a stock version of Android, whether through a custom firmware or not, you may have noticed that the dialer has ingrained search features letting you type up names of businesses and the dialer will give you the number (just like if you were doing a proper Google search for it) if it isn't in your contacts list.
This new Google Dialer said to be currently in development could have a focus on reaching a wider amount of people, presumably those with devices running on non-stock versions of the Android software, and also have some search features built into it allowing for a simpler way to search for businesses and people from within the dialer application who aren't a contact. The report mentions that the new dialer app could also be more integrated with Google's messenger service, although how specifically remains unclear.
This could be a direct response to both Facebook and Yahoo, both of which have been reported to be developing their own applications which have some sort of tie-in to their own messaging services. Facebook's being their own version of a dialer which has already been seen but not launched, and Yahoo's being a completely new app in the works said to potentially fuse messaging and video. When Google's new dialer could launch is anybody's guess, but the rumors suggest Google I/O coming up this June might be when we see it, speculating that Google could be waiting to release it alongside the next version of Android, which has also been rumored to get an unveiling at the annual developer conference this Summer. For those who use Android devices with manufacturer UI skins, a dialer from Google with the ability to search for businesses and people within it would be a huge boon, eliminating the need to exit out of the dialer just to find the number you need.
