AOKP Announce They Will Be Working On MIUI 7 With Xiaomi

There was a time in the custom world, where being one of the custom ROM or OS developers, assumed the meaning that you were anti-establishment. In effect, offering an alternative to the status quo of more official skins and OSes on devices. However, in more recent times, the bridge between an official ROM/OS and unofficial one has narrowed significantly. The likes of Cyanogen last year teamed up with OnePlus and then later on with Yu, to bring Cyanogen OS 11 to both the OnePlus One and Yureka, respectively. More recently, OnePlus unveiled their own homegrown OS in the form of OxygenOS and then duly announced that a bunch of the Paranoid Android developers were working on the development of their OS.

Now, the latest news on these cross official/alternative OS partnerships come from AOKP, who have just announced that they will be a software partner on the latest version of MIUI, MIUI 7. For those, unfamiliar with any of those words, AOKP is another alternative ROM which goes by the 'AOKP' acronym (Android Open Kang Project). MIUI on the other hand, is the OS skin which comes running on all Xiaomi devices. As such, Android Open Kang Project have now just announced that they are working on Xiaomi's latest operating system.

Of course, this has yet to be confirmed by Xiaomi and being announced on April Fool's Day does add an interesting twist to the announcing. However, this will partially make some sense to the AOKP fans out there, as it had been recently reported that it seemed AOKP had been quiet in terms of making any substantial Android 5.0 (Lollipop) announcements. Well, today's announcement confirms the lack of AOKP 5.0 was due to the AOKP team working behind the scenes over the last year to cement the deal with Xiaomi. That deal is now apparently being confirmed by AOKP who state that their influence will come with the "new and refreshed" MIUI 7. Which is slated to be based on Android 5.1 and to be released with the Xiaomi Mi 5. For those who were hoping to see an AOKP Lollipop ROM, then the announcement does state that they will continue to be working on this as well.
