You all know that China is filled with smartphone manufacturers, you can probably even list dozens of them. It's relatively easy to come to a conclusion that Chinese smartphone manufacturers ship a lot of smartphones during the year, but you might be surprised when you see the exact numbers / percentages. Chinese smartphone OEMs accounted for almost 40% of global smartphone sales last year and occupy six out of the top 10 spots for the amount of sold smartphones, at least according to TrendForce's newest report.
South Korean company, Samsung, is still leading the charge though. This Korean giant has a 28% market share, though it's down from 32.5% they had in 2013. Apple is following Samsung and holds 16.4% of the market, which is almost the same percentage the company had in 2013 (16.6%). Two more Asian companies found their place in the top 10 here, LG (4th place, 6%) and Sony (8th place, 3.9%), the remaining six spots are reserved for Chinese OEMs though.
Chinese OEM, Lenovo, is a third placed company on this list and it trails behind Samsung and Apple with 7.9% market share. The fact that they acquired Motorola Mobility from Google last year definitely help with that. Not only did it help, but it almost doubled Lenovo's smartphone shipments compared to 2013. Huawei is placed fifth here, and it holds 5.9% market share in 2014. Xiaomi is one of the fastest growing companies in the world, and they're placed sixth in this list with 5.2% market share. Xiaomi is followed by Coolpad (4.2%), Sony (which we already mentioned), ZTE (3.1%) and TCL (2.7%).
Trendforce projects that in 2015, three out of top 5 companies will be Chinese. According to them, Samsung and Apple will stay on top and Lenovo, Huawei and Xiaomi will be placed right below them within the chart. The company also added that global smartphone shipments grew to 1.167 billion units in 2014, which is a year-on-year increase of 25.9%. Anyhow, if you'd like to check out this chart by yourself, it's located below this article. Let us know if you agree with TrendForce's projection, or do you think things will turn out differently perhaps.
