When you work in the technology industry like we do, you see a lot of phones throughout the year. We started with the Xperia Z1s at CES for T-Mobile and ended the year with the Nexus 6. We’ve seen a whole lot of phones come across our desk in the past 12 months. Some of them seemed like they came out last year, so let’s just say it’s been a long year. But after careful thought and consideration, we’ve chosen our favorite smartphones of the year. And these are regular sized smartphones not Phablets or Mini’s those are in separate categories. These might not be your choices, but these are the ones we’ve chosen.
Winner – Moto X 2014
I know a lot of you are going to disagree with this pick. And say the Moto X is “boring”. But when you look at the specs, build quality, and software, it’s pretty much the best phone out there. Considering the Nexus 6, and Galaxy Note 4 are not in this category. The Moto X 2014 features a 1920×1080 resolution 5.2-inch AMOLED display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, 2GB of RAM and 16/32GB of internal storage. It also has a front-facing speaker (yes speaker and not speakers). It also comes in your choice of wood, leather or a plastic back. Which you can customize through MotoMaker.
Runner Up – Sony Xperia Z3
A lot of you outside the US probably feel that this should be the winner, but since it is only available on one carrier in the US, we have to give it the runner up. The Sony Xperia Z3 has the exact same specs as the Moto X, but with a much better camera. We’re looking at a 20.7MP camera which takes amazing pictures. There’s also the PlayStation 4 Remote Play which is a killer feature for those that own a PlayStation 4.
