It is a sad day if you are UK based. The news coming in this morning is that EE is finally waving farewell to Orange Wednesdays. If you are like me then this is now a memorable day. The Orange Wednesday promotion started some ten years back. For non-UK readers out there, Orange Wednesday was started by Orange (hence the name) who later went on to be merged with T-Mobile under the EE guise. So although the name doesn't make much sense now, it did back then. The beauty of the deal when it started was if you wanted to go to the cinema and if you were an orange customer and were willing to go on a Wednesday, you could get two tickets for the price of one. Not bad as long as you had a friend to go with.
Orange Wednesday went on to be a staple in the UK and really did offer a benefit to being an orange customer. Send a text, get a code and job done. Two tickets for the price of one. As such today's news will be sad for some. If you were planning on going to the cinema next Wednesday then don't worry too much. EE have announced that the deal will not fully come to an end until February 2015 so you still have a couple of months to take advantage of a cheap cinema ticket. If you are wondering why this is all happening then the reports seem to suggest this is a result of EE failing to agree terms with the commercial partner, Cinema First. Not to mention that the whole film thing is somewhat a conflict-of-interest now for EE who very much are pushing forward their 'watch a movie on your mobile with our great 4G network' type thing.
On a minor positive note, EE have confirmed that out of the ashes of Orange Wednesday another entertainment promotion will be born. There are no details on what this might be at the moment and it will have to be something half-decent to offer a similar reward to a BOGOF free cinema ticket. Either way, we'll know soon enough. So there you go. If you are an EE customer, it is time to take advantage of those last few remaining weeks of a free cinema ticket. The era of Orange Wednesday has passed.
