For those of us in the UK that have managed keep our gadget-lust in check with regards to buying a smart watch, it seems that we are facing yet another temptation. This time its LG’s second device running on Google’s Android Wear platform, and its imaginatively called the G Watch R, with the ‘R’ presumably short for ‘Round’. Clove Technology (UK) has announced that it is accepting orders for LG’s G Watch R, with the first stock arriving on October 24th (tomorrow), and orders shipping from the 27th. How much? Well it’s a tad more than the G Watch, with Clove Technology pricing the W Watch R at £224.99 ($360).
So what are you getting for your £224.99? Well, as you can see from the main image, you are getting a smart watch with a round face with a chronometer effect on the circular bezel. The display is an always-on 1.3-inch P-OLED affair, and the watch is powered by the Snapdragon 400 CPU that is clocked at 1.2GHz. There’s 4GB of internal storage available and 512MB of RAM. The 22mm strap is changeable, which means you aren’t trapped with the stock effort. Bluetooth 4.0 is present, and the G Watch R is compatible with all Android handsets that are running Android version 4.3 and above. In case of mishaps, it helps that the smart watch has an IP67 rating, which means it can be submerged for up to 30 minutes in fresh water with a depth of up to 1m. Handy indeed. The G Watch R has a slightly larger battery than the rectangular G Watch, with a 410mAh capacity. It’s not game changing, but every little bit counts. And speaking of charging, a charging cradle with Micro-USB is included in the box.
Since the announcement of the Moto 360, everyone has become excited about smart watches with round displays. LG have brought the G Watch R to the Android Wear party, and it matches Motorola’s effort and then some in my book. As ever though, when it comes to aesthetics, everyone has their own opinion on what is cool or not. So in your opinion, if you were in the market for an Android Wear smart watch, is LG’s G Watch R worth the £224.99 price tag? Let us know in the comments or at our Google Plus page.
