If you woke up this morning hoping not to hear too much news about Android 5.0 (Lollipop) then yeah, forget about that. Today the whole tech world is obsessed with when Lollipop will roll out and details are constantly emerging form companies, manufacturers and carriers. It will be like this for weeks now. Yesterday it was reported HTC confirmed they will honor their original claim of no more than ninety days before users can expect Lollipop to hit their HTC devices. It was also reported that the Nexus line of devices could expect an OTA update to Lollipop as early as November 3rd. To be clear Nexus devices really will be the first to see OTA Lollipop.

Now it seems it is the turn of Sony and if you are a Xperia Z owner then listen close, this concerns you. Sony today announced that they will make Lollipop available to the “entire premium Z series”. Now to make sure there is no misunderstanding this includes the following devices. First up is the standard Z series and includes the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1S, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3v. If you are a Compact owner then the list includes the Xperia Z1 Compact and Xperia Z3 Compact. Lastly, if you are a tablet owner (including Compact Tablets) then the list includes the Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z2 Tablet and the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact. Very lastly if you are a Sony Z Ultra Google Play Edition owner then you are very much in luck as you will be first up to receive the update.

So when? This will probably be taken badly by the current owners as they will obviously want the update today. According to the announcement the updates will begin rolling out to devices starting the “beginning of 2015”, for the “core Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z2” devices. All other devices will receive the update sometime thereafter. The eagle-eyed readers will be saying “Hey, you said the Google Play Editions” will get it first. Yes this is true. However, the timeframe was not provided in the press release with instead “we’ll be back with more details on that soon” suggesting it will be sooner than the initial ‘core’ device roll-out. It’s probably lastly worth noting that Sony do have a very important disclaimer listed at the bottom of the press release and will quote it in full so you know for sure what is says. “Software rollouts are a phased process – timings & availability will vary by market/operator. Most models supported but some operator/market exceptions will apply“. So don’t be surprised if you are a Z owner and don’t get it. According to Sony it won’t be there fault but your operator or market. So how does the timeframe sound? Happy to wait until the start of 2015? Hoping for it sooner? Let me know.
