Republic Wireless is probably a much lesser known MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) than others. In spite of this, the Sprint powered carrier has certainly been creative since its launch with the sole ethos to keep prices as low as possible for users. The logic behind this philosophy is those who are given the best deal will accommodate other short-comings to maintain the best deal. As a result Republic Wireless have tried hard to offer competitive pricing plans and structures. Back at the end of 2011 Republic Wireless launched the unlimited $19 plan which as the name suggests aimed to provide users with unlimited talk, text and data (for Android Users) for a flat $19. The only issue was Republic Wireless were limited on their compatible handsets with the $19 deal. Back at the start of 2013, Republic Wireless then decided to offer a $29 a month unlimited deal which was essentially the same as the $19 although it did not require the layout of purchasing the compatible devices at their premium price. With the $29 deal users could pay less (upfront) but also pay the $10 premium each month instead.
Well since then we have seen the number of compatible devices increase including Motorola’s Moto X and Moto G. In addition there have been advances in their deal structures with most notably an unlimited domestic roaming deal. Just in case you are unsure of domestic roaming this simply refers to using (sending or receiving calls, data etc) from your device when in a US area which is not supported directly by your carrier and relies on using the carrier’s mobile partners for service. Well as mentioned Republic Wireless was offering unlimited roaming data at no extra charge. Sounds good huh! Well, unfortunately for Republic Wireless users the dream is over.
Today the company announced they were abandoning the unlimited domestic roaming plan. The main reason for this is spiraling costs. According to the official announcement roaming charges cost 30x more than on-network charges and these just simply cannot be maintained at the going rate. According to Republic Wireless not all of their customers want or need this feature but keeping it open to all, adds cost to everyone’s plan. As such the company outlined their future direction of domestic roaming by advising they will offer domestic roaming as an add-on feature to their current plans so that those who do want the service can get it. However, this will take time to implement and in the meantime they will still offer domestic roaming to all, but in a reduced capacity. Starting from September 15th all users will only receive 25MB a month domestic roaming capabilities. In addition, the general speeds received while roaming will be greatly reduced. According to Republic Wireless this will be enough for those who want the service while not impeding on the cost of all users overall. Either way be prepared for the domestic roaming changes which come into effect next week.
