The Sony Xperia Z3 may not be a big upgrade over the Z2 that was released 6 months ago, but it's still a pretty darn good phone. In addition to its amazing battery life, the device is one of the few on the market that is IP65/68 certified to be dust- and water-resistant. It's basically waterproof, although Sony can't claim that for legal reasons. Even so, the phone can handle up to five feet of water pressure for over an hour and come up asking for more. Carphone Warehouse wanted to put this to the test, so they did their unboxing for the device underwater. I mean, why not?
Most unboxing are pretty boring, so hats off to Carphone Warehouse for making this one fun. The video is just what you'd expect from an unboxing video. The man in front of the camera shows off the phone, the charger, everything that comes in the box. He just does it while wearing a divers helmet and breathing from an oxygen tank. The description on the YouTube video says it was filmed in a pool. It appears that the video was filmed under a couple of feet of water. We get a selfie and some other photos part way through the video, too. The Xperia Z3 will not only survive but appears to be fully functional while underwater.
The Xperia Z3 is essentially the Z2 with a slightly rounded back and a little more RAM. The screen is a bit better too, and Sony slimmed down the overall design a bit. If you own a Z2 it may not be worth it to you to upgrade just yet. If you own a Z1 or are looking at a Sony device for the first time, it's one of the best phones on the market right now. That's also assuming that you live in a region where the Z3 is available. I don't see myself taking lots of photos underwater, but it's a neat trick that really shows off one of the best features of this great device. You can watch the full video unboxing below.
