Well here's some, not so exciting, news from OnePlus One. It appears at launch that you'll need to have an invite to pick one of these up. The launch is set for next week, April 23rd. OnePlus is saying that this invite system is going to be user friendly. Now on the bright side, it means that those with an invite are guaranteed a device. Instead of getting "out of stock" messages and so on. But it still kind of sucks. You'd think they'd let it be open to everyone. OnePlus mentions that the invitations will be limited at least at first. OnePlus hasn't started issuing out invitations just yet, but we should see them coming out in the coming days. Especially with the launch in less than a week.
"So how do you get an invite? Invites will also be made available through friends, contests, and on this forum (you have not been forgotten). We value thoughtful contributions from active fans. Once you've bought a OnePlus One, you'll also become eligible to invite your friends in the future."
We do know that the OnePlus One will be available in 16 countries and will be under $400 USD here in the US. Which is a pretty low price tag given the specs of the OnePlus One. We're looking at a 5.5-inch IPS display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, 3GB of RAM, 13MP camera and a 3100mAh battery inside. Pretty hefty specs for a sub-$400 smartphone. The OnePlus One is certainly promising, but this invite-only system is going to piss a lot of people off – in fact it already has. So we'll have to wait and see how well this phone does. I'm not expecting anything crazy from OnePlus in terms of number of units sold, though.
