We seem to be wrapping up the week at CES with some rumors, and this one is coming from HP. This is just a rumor, so let's not get too excited just yet, and don't forget to bring your salt shakers to this party, because many grains of salt will be needed. Now that you have been fully aware that this may just be as much of a true story as any fairy tale you may know, here it is, HP might be gearing up to release a new and cheap smart phone. Particularly, one that will be released in Brazil, Russia,India and China and even more particularly, the prepaid markets in those countries.
The rumors has been brought to light by the people over at 9to5google, and they say their sources are from within HP itself. Though there was talk by HP CEO, Meg Whitman last year, that they are working on a smart phone. When Whitman was quoted saying that, there was no more information as far as a date was concerned. Which brings us back around to the rumored device.
The device is said to possibly launch "as soon as next week." The device will cost around $200, and that's the unlocked model. Which better prepares you for where the device will land as far as specs are concerned. The device may resemble the Samsung Galaxy Note with a 5.5-inch display.
That is about all of the information received about the device, and if it is due to launch next week, that makes things a bit fishy. Unless HP plans on doing something huge and last-minute to announce the device, it may not do so well. Maybe the leaked information is part of the plan, that would be interesting.
If we dig far enough we find that the past could define the future in this rumor. The comments made by Whitman could be a tell, "We don't have any plans to introduce a smart phone in 2013, but we've got to start thinking about what is our unique play, how do we capture this element of the personal computing market?" Well if innovation is what their goal is, then what they bring out next is hopefully something we haven't seen before. Whitman continued to give many people an idea that they plan to launch a device around the same size as this rumored phone, and around the same pricing but by the end of 2013. Now we are in early 2014 so maybe this is the phone in question, but just a little late. Which if you think about it, is not something that is abnormal regarding phone releases.
Now it's time to hear from you, what do you think about HP releasing a device of the Galaxy Note size and form factor for $200 unlocked?
