Sony Officially Reveal Xperia Z Ultra: 1080p Display at 6.4-inches Powered by Snapdragon 800; Just 6.5mm thin

The Xperia Z Ultra has not been one of Sony's best kept secrets but now it's officially been announced by the Japanese company. With this latest Xperia, Sony are pushing into the large smartphone arena like nobody before them – not even if Samsung have reached these sizes, yet – with a massive 6.4-inch display and some serious horsepower to back the whole thing up. With a device as large as this, we're assuming Sony wants you to pick up a SmartWatch as well. As you'll probably tell from the image above, the Xperia Z Ultra is a sort of update – more of an upgrade – to the original Xperia Z and they share a lot of the same looks. They also share that same water and dust resistance with IP55 and IP58 ratings, leading Sony themselves to describe the device as "waterproof".

Where the two differ however, is what's under the hood. With that massive display, at 6.4-inches, Sony have had a little extra room to play with and that's led to some improvements. First of all, the display seems to be a new type for their mobile devices, they're calling it "TRILUMINOUS" as oppose to the "Opti-Contrast" display used in the Xperia Z. Let's take a look at the specs below:

  • 6.4-inch 1080p TRILUMINOUS LCD Display
  • Quad-Core Snapdragon 800 at 2.2 Ghz, which is being called "the world's fastest"
  • 2GB of RAM
  • 16GB of Storage with microSD support
  • 8MP rear-facing camera with 2MP front-facing camera
  • 3,000 mAh Battery
  • Android 4.2
  • Sony are listing support for "any pencil and selected stylus or pen (capacitive stylus or metal pen with tip diameter over 1mm)" for writing and pen-input
  • 6.5mm thin

When it comes to the build of the device, Sony have decided to go with a metal frame and the same sort of look and feel of the Xperia Z. The megapixel count has actually fallen from the Xperia Z, 13MP down to 8MP, but as we discovered in our review of the Xperia Z, more megapixels don't make for a better camera. In fact, they rarely ever do, especially when we're talking about sensors of this size, for most people 8MP is a perfectly sizable resolution. As for the rest of the device, Sony have pulled out the stops to come up with something current and up-to-date, and at 6.4-inches it's pretty unique in terms of size. The Snapdragon 800 is one fast CPU and we're sure that this will be significantly faster than the Xperia Z. Take a look at Sony's video to see what it's all about:
