We knew that Samsung and Jay Z had something planned for Sunday nights NBA Finals game. Well now the cat's out of the bag. If you own a Samsung Galaxy device you'll be able to win one of a million copies of Jay-Z's "Magna Carta Holy Grail". A million people that own a Galaxy device will get the album 3 days before it launches on July 4th. Jay-Z had hinted at the endorsement deal on Sunday when he appeared in a TV commercial during the Game 5 of the NBA Finals last night. We appear along with Pharrell Williams and producer Rick Rubin. The tagline was "The Next Big Thing" which was a teaser for the early release of Magna Carta Holy Grail on Galaxy devices.
Samsung purchased 1 million copies of Jay-Z's album which is scheduled to be released on July 4th. The WSJ is reporting that Samsung paid $5 for each of the albums. Giving Jay-Z $5 million before his new album even goes on sale. This deal is rather important for a variety of reasons. One is that it allows Samsung to further polish their image in the US as it continues the Apple v Samsung war in the US and worldwide.
This deal could also help Samsung's Music Hub, which is Samsung's streaming music service that's available on most of their devices to compete with Apple's new iTunes Radio. But Apple has a leg up on the competition as you can get previews of tracks before they are available elsewhere. Now if Samsung becomes successful in building an attractive ecosystem for its mobile devices, that will help the manufacturer retain their customers. Especially if the current phablet trend slows down.
