It’s not every day that you get to see a phone seriously abused, and yet it still lives to tell the tale. In a series of demo videos from Sony France, called ‘Xperimentations’, we get to see just that. Sony shows off the strength of the flashy Xperia Z as they bombard it with water, dust and ink. Probably the coolest aspect is the slow motion effects, but I digress.
After being attacked by various elements, the Xperia Z proudly receives an incoming call, proving that it can still work after serious abuse. I’m willing to bet that glossy surface would have a hard time withstanding a few drops, but at least the phone would still work.
If you can’t tell by the design, the Xperia Z is remarkably similar to the Xperia ZL. Both devices were shown off at CES earlier this year, and I expect to see even more at MWC.
When comparing the two, the Z has a much thinner form factor, and, of course, the added protection from the elements. If you ever found yourself on the fence, trying to reach a decision between the two devices, Sony is showing you why you should just go ahead and get the Z.
In the past, Sony has had quite a difficult time in the high-end Android market. Despite offering devices that provided what they thought to be excellent build quality, the inner workings were pretty lackluster when compared to the competition. It’s not that Sony doesn’t deliver when it comes to hardware and features, it’s just that there are so many manufacturers out there who do it better.
This year, though, it looks like Sony might actually hit a ball out of the park. The Xperia Z is one of the most attractive devices coming to market. If they can hold out against the competition, they should be able to make more of a name for themselves. The Samsung Galaxy SIV and the long rumored X phone are on the way so that might change.
If anything, these videos show off just what the Xperia Z can handle, and it can certainly take a beating. In case you’re on a mobile, the links for each video are included.
Here’s, a quick list of what the Xperia Z is working with under the hood:
- 5-inch TFT LCD Display
- 1920 x 1080 HD resolution (16 million colors)
- 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapadragon S4 quad-core processor
- Adreno 320 GPU
- 2GB of Installed RAM
- 13 Megapixel rear facing camera with auto focus and flash
- 2 Megapixel front facing camera (1080p video)
- Android 4.1 Jelly Bean
- IPX5/7 (Water resistant) and IP5X (dust proof) certified
- Battery: Estimated 11 hours talk time, 55 hours standby
I don’t know about you, but I think those are some pretty impressive specs. The 13 megapixel camera is enough to get my juices flowing. Furthermore, when you consider the quad-core processor, Adreno GPU and the 2GB of Installed RAM, let’s just say Sony may have a chance this time around.
