21 Days of Android Gifts: Day #16: Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1

For the last couple of weeks now, we've been bringing you a fresh gift idea everyday and some of them have been no-brainers, some pricey and some stocking fillers. Today's gift idea that I'm bringing you might be a little bit of a head-scratcher. Yes, that's right, I'm suggesting the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 as a gift for Christmas. Stay with me, okay? It's a known fact that the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 isn't the fastest tablet out there – especially in the face of the Note 10.1 but, that doesn't make it a bad tablet. Of course there are much better alternatives out there and you could argue that the Nexus 7 is a better tablet – in fact, I'm going to agree with you – but what the Tab 2 10.1 has going for it is this: availability. Having an Android tablet is great – they're easier to take around than a laptop and depending on just what you need to do on the go, they can serve your needs really quite well.

The best thing about this mediocre tablet is that it's available on Sprint, AT&T and Verizon carrying LTE. Which might not be much good for you Sprint customers but Verizon's LTE coverage is pretty good and it's getting by every week so, with the Tab 2 10.1 and LTE whoever you give this to will be able to get online whenever and wherever they like – without having to worry about poor WiFi signal.

If you want to know more of what the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 is packing underneath the hood then take a look at this:

  • Dual-core 1Ghz TI OMAP 4430 – Dual-Core Snapdragon S4 for the LTE versions
  • 1GB RAM with 16 or 32GB of Storage, with room for a microSD card
  • 10.1" 1280—800 LCD Display (again at 149 ppi)
  • VGA front-facing camera and 3.2MP rear-facing camera
  • WiFi b/g/n, GPS and WiFi Direct
  • 7000 maH battery

So, while it might not be the most glamorous tablet out there for Android fans, it's perhaps the best tablet that's available on LTE and we all want some LTE in our lives, right? Until the Note 10.1 hits LTE networks here in the states, the Tab 2 10.1 is a solid option and being able to tie it to your data plan on Verizon for just $5 a month is a pretty good deal. I know I would like Santa to bring me an LTE Android tablet for Christmas…

For years now I've had a heavy interest in technology, growing up with 8-bit computers and gaming consoles has fed into an addiction to everything that beeps. Android saved me from the boredom of iOS years ago and I love watching the platform grow. As an avid reader and writer nothing pleases me more than to write about the exciting world of Android, Google and mobile technology as a whole.
