We first told you over the weekend that T-Mobile, Sprint and Dish were all looking to purchase or merge with MetroPCS. According to Reuters and Bloomberg “three sources familiar with the situation” are claiming a deal between T-Mobile and MetroPCS is “close”. So close in fact that an official announcement could be happening tomorrow.
Now when I first broke this story on Friday evening, I thought Sprint would buy MetroPCS since they are both CDMA carriers. T-Mobile is a GSM carrier, making MetroPCS incompatible with T-Mobile’s network. But the part of MetroPCS that will help out T-Mobile is the existing LTE network that MetroPCS currently has. Especially since T-Mobile hasn’t even started to rollout their LTE network yet, it’s not due until next year.
Either way, we hope to get more information soon about what T-Mobile and Deutsche Telekom plan to do with MetroPCS. Anyone surprised to see MetroPCS become part of T-Mobile USA? Let your thoughts be known in the comments below.
“MetroPCS today confirmed that it is in discussions with Deutsche Telekom regarding an agreement to combine T-Mobile USA and MetroPCS. There can be no assurances that any transaction will result from these discussions, and the Company does not intend to comment further unless and until an agreement is reached.”
