The fact that Sony Ericsson chose to call it the Xperia Play won't change the fact that to most people it will be the Playstation Phone. With a separate store on the device that has ported Playstation games and that familiar Dual-Shock look, it will easily be a well-received device by the Sony Community.
That doesn't mean that other developers won't make use of the controller-packing Android phone! Developer Handy Games will have three games in the Android Market before the Xperia Play launches that are fully compatible with the extra buttons. All three games have a free lite version for Xperia Play users AND others to try. They are in the market now, and will be updated before the phone launches.
