6-way Video Chat for Android by ooVoo

December 17, 2010 - Written By Chris Yackulic

ooVoo has launched its 6-way video-chatting to the Android platform.  Yes it can handle up to 6 members at a time.  Calls are made over WiFi, 3G, or 4G (ideally).  You can get contacts from your phone contacts and social network contacts.  Also ooVoo gives the option of texting your contacts instead of strictly video calls.

That seems like a lot of data to handle?  Yes, ooVoo’s solution is offloading the processing of the videos to their servers.  Their servers would handle the heavy work and optimize them for your phone.  Its current program gives us video feeds one-at-a-time for now, but you can simply switch over among the other 5 conversations with ease.  They tell us that in the future they will put thumbnails on the call/chat interface so it will really look like a 6-way meeting.

Currently ooVoo’s app is available for the HTC Evo 4G and the Samsung Epic 4G.  A number of other devices are listed as “coming soon,” including five Android phones and some devices running a fruity system called iOS.  Once your device has ooVoo optimized, you can call other ooVoo users running it on their mobiles, or their Mac or PC as well.
