You have too many screens, have another to control them

Here’s an odd one: a screen to control all the screens in your life.  Ericsson demoed a tablet/remote device at the Australian Broadcast Exhibition that controls the ‘three-screens’ in your life: TV, computer, phone.

Ericsson expects that this will be sold through your cable operator as an add-on device.  It is basically a 25 cm (9.8 inch) tablet that will control internet video, TV programming (live and on-demand), cell phone, and home computer.

There is a second screen for viewing TV guides or loading your Twitter feed (I don’t see it from the picture…), such that they don’t interrupt your viewing experience.

Ericsson claims that they have rolled this out to over 7000 households in 7 countries for testing.  They say that it looks promising, that 30% of consumers plug their computer into their TV for bigger picture and the lean-back experience, therefore everyone wants to use one screen to facilitate a multi-screen experience.  I frankly don’t get it.
