You may have heard that HTC is switching from AMOLED screens to Sony’s Super LCD (SLCD). If not, you can get caught up here. How does the new display stack up?
Howard of howardforums fame filmed an excellent comparison with LCD, AMOLED, Super AMOLED, and SLCD. This was done with the Milestone, Nexus One, Galaxy S, and the new Telus HTC Desire respectively.

In my opinion, SLCD easily beats the regular LCD. In some cases, it seems better than AMOLED (direct sunlight is definitely one of them), but they seem pretty equal otherwise. Unfortunately, nothing beats the amazing Super AMOLED of the Samsung Galaxy S phones at the moment. Seriously, videos don’t do justice to that beauty. You should step into a T-Mobile or AT&T store and check out the Vibrant or Captivate. That screen is amazing (I think it’s better than the iPhone 4, personally)!
Basically, if you are going to be getting an HTC device that formerly had a AMOLED screen, you will not be disappointed with the substitution.
