Edwin, Speak Easy: An Android App Review

July 29, 2010 - Written By Chris Yackulic
App Name: Edwin by Neureau

Description: Edwin is a speech-to-speech voice assistant & utility. Ask it the weather, make calls, SMS, tweets and much more! Edwin requires Speech Synthesis Data and TTS Extended apps from the Android Marketplace.

How it works: Edwin is a free voice activated application that makes using your Android device much easier. You can do many things with Edwin – You can search, dial, check the date and time, launch applications, enable/disable hardware, map locations, spell/define words, translate sentences and send tweets. The best part about this application is that it talks back. Once you install the speech synthesis data and TTS Extended apps, you are ready to speak away the commands of your choice.

Opinion: After many hours of talking to my phone like a man who needs to be admitted in a mental institution, I must say that this is the most fun that I’ve had with talking to my phone in a long time. Not sure if this is an Easter egg to anyone but if you say “hello” to the application she will reply back with many common courtesy responses to your greeting. You know, this application has more manners than a lot of people we walk by nowadays; maybe it’s because I’m in New York. Did I mention this app was free?

  • Speed (4/5) – Fast enough to keep you entertained.
  • Features (4/5) – ┬áSpeak your commands (Date, weather, map locations)
  • Theme (4/5) – Speech to Speech Application
  • Overall (5/5) – Great app that has the potential to be a daily driver.

Pro: Speech recognition is responsive and works well with the different commands that you can do in the application.

Cons: Takes 8-13 seconds to connect a call request. Edwin doesn’t have a widget; at least not yet.

Overall: Edwin is a must have application and since it is free of charge that should not be difficult at all! This application will come in handy when you’re in the car or wherever you decide to travel. This is a great start for a speech to speech application and the updates can only make it even better. Check out the you-tube video if you are having trouble using the application.
