Samsung Pay To Land In Russia Along With The Galaxy S7?

February 16, 2016 - Written By Mihai Matei

Samsung Pay has been a great success so far, at least in the very few regions where the service has been available since early 2015. Samsung’s mobile payment system was introduced at MWC 2015 along with the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, but so far the service has been limited to a handful of markets only, including the US and South Korea. Nevertheless, if last week’s rumors turn out to be correct then Samsung Pay will expand its reaches to at least two new European countries including the UK and Spain, following MWC 2016. More recently, however, rumors have it that Samsung Pay will also become available in Russia along with the new Galaxy S7 series.

Recently there have been several reports to suggest that Samsung is planning a big announcement regarding Samsung Pay during MWC 2016 in Spain. Industry insiders expect the Korean tech giant to introduce Samsung Pay in a handful of new countries, and predict that Samsung will reveal these details during the official announcement of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, which should take place on February 21st. According to a new rumor passed along by prolific Russian blogger Eldar Murtazin, Samsung Pay will also become available in Russia at the same time as the Samsung Galaxy S7 series, which should hit the shelves several weeks after their official announcement in Barcelona, Spain.

The rumor is backed up by the leaked image below, which allegedly shows promotional material for the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S7 in Russia. The interesting bit is that the poster, which apparently belongs to Russian network provider MTS, specifically mentions “Samsung Pay”, and because the aforementioned mobile payment service does require carrier approval, it looks like Samsung and MTS may have joined forces in order to bring Samsung Pay to Russian consumers.

It’s also worth noting that the smartphone depicted in the poster looks very similar to the recent Samsung Galaxy S7 renders, making the leak that much more credible. Nonetheless, keep in mind that these details are not yet official and they should be treated accordingly, at least until Samsung -hopefully – sheds more light on the matter during Mobile World Congress.
