Xiaomi Mi 5 To Go On Sale A Week After Feb 20th Launch

While Xiaomi has been releasing mid-range smartphones left, right and center, the company hasn’t launched a premium handset in what seems like ages now. The current flagship from the company, the Mi 4, was launched as far back as July 2014 and since then – unbelievable as it may sound – the company has, for one reason or another, failed to bring a product with top-end hardware to the market. Now, however, all that is expected to change, with Xiaomi’s next-gen flagship smartphone, the Mi 5, being officially confirmed to be announced on the 20th of next month, after the annual Sprint Festival that’s held early February across the People’s Republic, marking the official onset of the Chinese New Year.

While talks regarding the February launch of the Mi 5 have been doing the rounds of the Chinese tech media for a while, latest reports claim that the device will go on sale just about a week after its announcement, which must be music to the ears of Xiaomi fans worldwide. This was revealed on Thursday evening on Chinese microblogging site Weibo, by Xiaomi’s co-founder and senior vice presidet, Mr. Liwan Jiang. With all the pent-up demand that has built up for both Xiaomi’s upcoming flagship and for Qualcomm’s new top-shelf chip, the upcoming Mi 5 is expected to become a major hit for the company, although, whether or not that happens in actuality, remains to be seen. While not all the details regarding the Mi 5’s hardware is clear at the onset, Mr. Jiang had already revealed earlier that the phone will indeed be powered by the much-awaited Snapdragon 820 SoC from American semiconductor chipmaker Qualcomm.

As for the rest of the specs, while not confirmed just as yet, multiple leaks from various sources over the past several weeks have claimed that the device will feature a 5.5 Quad HD display (2560 x 1440 pixels) with 2.5D glass. As for the CPU with Qualcomm’s custom Kryo cores, it will be clocked at a maximum frequency of 2.5 GHz. The phone is said to be made available in three variants with different amounts of internal storage – 16 GB, 64 GB and 128 GB, but 4 GB of RAM is expected to be present across the board. There are talks of a 20-megapixel camera on the back and an 8-megapixel unit up front for selfies, and will carry a 3,800 mAh battery. A fingerprint scanner, an NFC chip and a USB Type-C port are also expected to be present on the device.
