Google Updates Local Guides Program With Tempting Rewards

If you own an Android device, chances are you make use of Google Maps. It is one of the most feature-rich Google services and at times, can be invaluable when you need to find directions, find out where you are or just learn about a certain location. In fact, the integration of Maps with reviews by local people is another invaluable aspect, as they are the people who know those places, shops, restaurants and so on and can provide the best level of information.

This is probably why Google created the Local Guides program. This is a program which sort of rewards those who help provide the information for Google Maps with recognition. Well, yesterday it was reported that some Guides (who had achieved more than 200 points) were receiving messages from Google that they were now entitled to 1 TB’s worth of free Google Drive storage. At the time it was unclear as to why users were getting these messages. However, since then Google has come out and announced they are expanding the Local Guides program.

In case you are wondering, an awarded point typically is thought to equate to a review. Although, Google points out that points can also be awarded for additional services that help the Maps community. Like for instance, uploaded pictures, fixing outdated info and so on. In terms of the rewards for accumulating points, there are five levels on offer that a Guide can look to reach. Level 1 is awarded to Guides with four or less points and offers access to exclusive contests and so on. Level 2 is for those who reach up to 49 points and they will get “early access” to new products and features that Google is touting. Anywhere less than 200 points will see a Guide building up to level 3, which means you are now officially listed on Maps as a Local Guide, with an official badge too. If you accumulate more than two hundred points, but less that 500 then you will receive the 1TB Google Drive storage that was previously noted. While the big kahuna is level 5 and to reach this status, you will need to be in receipt of an excess of 500 points. This will mean you are “eligible to apply” to go to an event and meet other Level 5 Guides. That is in addition to all the perks that Guides in Levels 1 to 4 receive.
