Laser Auto-Focus On The Nexus 6P Blocked With Some Cases

With the launch of the new Huawei-made Nexus 6P, Google is re-focusing on bringing a much better camera experience to the Nexus line. This is in no small part thanks to Huawei as well who have fitted the Nexus 6P with some awesome camera specs, like the Sony sensor and the laser auto-focus to help the camera focus in on the subjects more accurately and quickly. The laser auto-focus sits just to the right of the actual camera sensor and the LED flash in the black bar up at the top of the phone for those who are unaware. Alongside the new camera specs, the Nexus 6P also sports the Nexus line’s first full metal body design, something which users may want to protect so it stays looking nice.

To do this you would buy a case, many of which in the third-party category have been available since before the official announcement of the phone. The issue with some third-party cases it seems is that they block the laser auto-focus sensor on the back, likely resulting in some terrible photos if the laser auto-focus isn’t allowed to do its job. Not all of the cases you can find on Amazon lack enough room for the laser sensor, but now knowing how far to the right it is you can simply compare the room left by Google’s official cases to some of the ones on Amazon and see that they clearly don’t have enough space.

As some of these case manufacturers had the cases available before the announcement, this displays that they were unaware of the laser auto-focus altogether or they simply didn’t know where the location was. If you’ve ordered a brand new Nexus 6P and are thinking about getting a case, it’s a good idea to be sure about which ones will leave room for the laser auto-focus so you are still able to use it, otherwise you’d be looking at taking the case off anytime you want to take pictures. There are a couple of screenshots below which display cases that seem to block the sensor, while others like the Moko Anti-Drop hard case (the third image) seem to have enough of an opening. You could also just buy the cases straight from Google through the Google Store although chances are these cases will cost a little more than what you can find on Amazon.
