Comparison: Samsung Gear S2, Gear S2 Classic & Gear S2 3G

Today, Samsung officially announced their latest smartwatch, the Samsung Gear S2. During the announcement, Samsung detailed there are three different versions of the smartwatch and they are the Gear S2, Gear S2 Classic and the Gear S2 3G. If you are wondering what the difference is between them, then here is a brief overview of what each device offers.

Samsung Gear S2

The first and what is best thought of as the ‘standard’ model is the Samsung Gear S2. This one comes with the SM-R720 model number and comes equipped with a 1.2-inch Circular Super AMOLED display with a 360 x 360 resolution (302 ppi). Internally, the Gear S2 is equipped with 512MB RAM, 4GB internal storage and powered by a 1.0 GHz Exynos dual-core processor along with a Mali-400 GPU. Sensors on offer include Accelerometer, Gyroscope, Heart Rate, Ambient Light and Barometer, while audio playback support is offered for MP3, M4A, AAC, OGG. In terms of connectivity the Gear S2 comes with support for Wi-Fi: 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1 and NFC. Additionally, the Gear S2 is IP68 certified dust and water resistance. In terms of battery, the Gear S2 Comes equipped with a 250 mAh capacity li-on battery which is rechargeable and supports wireless charging and is said to offer 2-3 days worth of use. The Gear S2 runs on Tizen OS. Lastly, the Gear S2 measures 42.3 x 49.8 x 11.4 mm, weighs 47g and will be available in two color variants, Dark Gray with a Dark Gray band or Silver with a White band.

Samsung Gear S2 Classic

The second option on offer is the Gear S2 Classic and generally speaking comes with almost the same spec list. The Gear S2 Classic comes with the SM-R732 model number and also comes with a 1.2-inch Circular Super AMOLED display with a 360 x 360 resolution (302 ppi). Inside, the Gear S2 Classic is also equipped with 512MB RAM, 4GB internal storage and powered by the same 1.0 GHz Exynos dual-core processor with with a Mali-400 GPU. Sensors on offer again include an Accelerometer, Gyroscope, Heart Rate, Ambient Light and Barometer while audio playback support the same with support for MP3, M4A, AAC, OGG included. In terms of connectivity the Gear S2 Classic also supports Wi-Fi: 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1 and NFC. The Gear S2 Classic is IP68 certified dust and water resistance and comes sporting the same 250 mAh capacity li-on rechargeable and wireless charging supported battery, which again offers a 2-3 day charge. Likewise, the Gear S2 Classic runs on Tizen OS but does differ in its dimensions with the S2 Classic measuring a smaller 39.9 x 43.6 x 11.4 mm and weighing a lighter 42g. In contrast to the Gear S2, the Gear S2 Classic will only be available in black with a black leather band.

Samsung Gear S2 3G

Last up is the Samsung Gear S2 3G and this is again, largely similar in terms of specs to the Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic with some minor but important details. The Gear S2 3G comes with the SM-R730 model number and is equipped with a 1.2-inch Circular Super AMOLED display with a 360 x 360 resolution (302 ppi). Inside, the Gear S2 3G is equipped with 512MB RAM, 4GB internal storage and powered by a 1.0 GHz Exynos dual-core processor along with a Mali-400 GPU. The same sensors are on offer including an Accelerometer, Gyroscope, Heart Rate, Ambient Light and Barometer. Audio playback support is offered for MP3, M4A, AAC, OGG. While connectivity sees one of the biggest differences. The Gear S2 3G comes with the same support for Wi-Fi: 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1 and NFC but also offers standalone 3G connectivity through an e-SIM. The Gear S2 3G is IP68 certified dust and water resistance and comes equipped with a larger 300 mAh capacity Li-on battery, which again is rechargeable and supports wireless charging and is said to offer a reduced two-day charge. The Gear S2 3G also runs on Tizen OS and is the biggest and heaviest of the devices measuring 44.0 x 51.8 x 13.4 mm and weighing 51g. The Samsung Gear S2 3G will only be available in the dark grey with dark grey band color variant.
