Google Adds Present To Hangouts In Latest Slides Update

August 5, 2015 - Written By Justin Diaz

Google has recently updated its powerpoint style application ‘Slides‘ with a powerful new feature for those who use the app in accordance with work related tasks. The feature of course is available to anyone who use Slides but it makes more sense for those who use it in regards to business. The latest version of Slides now allows users to stream their slideshows to a Hangouts video call that is presently going on which could serve to be a useful tool for businesses using Google Apps for work. It could also serve as a great tool for education for any institutions who use both Hangouts and Slides for various tasks.

This is an Android specific feature, at least for now, so those unfortunately using iOS devices won’t be able to stream Slides to Hangouts calls. Having said that, since this is an Android specific feature it means you’ll need to be using Slides from an Android smartphone or tablet to have access to the stream to Hangouts feature. Whether or not Google plans to expand this capability to either iOS or the web versions of Slides is unknown at this point, so for now you’ll need your Android devices to take advantage of it which may seem a little limiting to some users.

Those who use Slides will be happy to know that even when streaming to Hangouts they will still have full control of the Slides app. This means you can move between slides like normal and use all other features without any interruption to the presentation. The app update should already be live on the Play Store so those who already have Slides installed should be able to see it in their “my apps” list, while new users could simply just install the app for the first time from the main store. If the update isn’t quite there yet users should expect it to show up sometime over the course of the day or next few days. The ability to present to a Hangouts video call joins the already available functionality to cast presentations to a Chromecast device. Now Slides offers a way to make presentations easier for groups to view whether they’re all in the same room or in different locations.
