Samsung KIES Reveals Update For Rumored Galaxy Tab S2

July 19, 2015 - Written By David Steele

We have very recently reported that Samsung are preparing to announce the successor devices to the Samsung Galaxy Tab S tablets, which are available in both 8.4-inch and 10.5-inch (showing above) with and without LTE. We are expecting the announcement for the Galaxy Tab S2 to happen this next week, perhaps as early as tomorrow, but meanwhile firmware has appeared on the German Samsung KIES server that shows an update for the Galaxy Tab S2, putting the device to Android 5.0.2 Lollipop. This appears to verify that the Tab S2 is indeed a real device. Samsung KIES is the desktop software that may be used to backup, restore and update Samsung smartphones and tablets. The firmware update is the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 9.7-inch LTE variant, which has the model designation of SM-T815. It’s software build number T815XXU1AOG5 with a build date of the 9 July 2015. Other models in the Galaxy Tab S2 range include the Galaxy Tab S2 WiFi, designation SM-T810, and Galaxy Tab S2 3G with model designation SM-T812.

The firmware also confirms that the tables will have a 9.7-inch, 4:3 aspect ratio display with a resolution of 2,048 by 1,536 pixels. Unfortunately, we don’t have any additional specification information at this juncture. Rumors point towards the Tab S2 having a Samsung Exynos 5 octa-core System-on-Chip, likely to arranged in a traditional big.LITTLE configuration with a lower powered quad core unit assisted by a higher powered quad core processor. It’s expected that the Exynos SoC will be supported by 3 GB of RAM and the Mali-T760 eight core GPU, Graphics Processor Unit. The cameras are purported to be a 7MP unit on the back and a 2MP front facing unit.

Other rumors for the device include that it will be available in 8.0-inch and 9.7-inch screen sizes, be powered by a similar processor to the Exynos 7420 unit we find inside the Galaxy S6 family and be just 5.4mm thin, reclaiming the world’s thinnest tablet badge of honor. However, until Samsung release information about the new tablet, we simply do not know if these rumors are true. However, we hope to find out in the coming few days.
