Samsung’s Protection Plus Offers Two Year Extended Warranty Coverage for Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge

The new Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge are the two most beautiful devices that Samsung has ever produced – a full aircraft-grade aluminum unibody with Gorilla Glass 4 adorning the display and the back of the devices.  That dual-curved edges of the Galaxy S6 Edge add a look that has that certain ‘WOW’ factor that simple cannot be denied. But, with great beauty, comes great responsibility…and though the devices are fairly durable, in fact, the Galaxy S6 is the device to beat in a recent ‘Breakability Score,’ although the Galaxy S6 Edge did not fare quite as well.  That fact, coupled with another – the Galaxy S6 Edge is also the most expensive device for Samsung to manufacture, might give you thought of getting insurance to protect your precious new investment.

Many users, purchase insurance on their devices directly from the carrier when they buy their device, but Samsung also offers their own protection plans called Protection Plus Mobile Elite for their new devices.  It falls under ‘Cell Phone Accessories’ on their website.  The extended warranty extends your coverage to two years from the original purchase date – cost for the protection is $99 for the normal Galaxy S6 and $129 for the Galaxy S6 Edge…no doubt due to the curved edges on the S6 Edge, which are Gorilla Glass 4, but still ‘glass.’  The Protection Plus Mobile Elite covers: Accidental Damage – Cracked Displays or Liquid Damage and Extends the warranty to cover ‘mechanical damage’ after the one-year limited warranty expires.

As with most warranties, there are certain restrictions – you must purchase the Protection Plus Mobile Elite insurance with 30 days of buying your smartphone –  there is a 15 day waiting period before your coverage takes effect – the coverage starts when your purchase your device and the display and water damage lasts two years, but the warranty for mechanical damages coincides with the first year of the regular warranty and then adds an additional year – there is a service fee involved per incident – $95 on the Galaxy S6 Edge and $75 on the Galaxy S6 – and the scope of the warranty is limited to three incidents of accidental damage during those 24 months of coverage.

Only you can determine if your carrier’s coverage – generally $7 – $10 a month – is a better deal than Samsung’s own coverage.  With coverage from the carrier, you generally get a replacement device within 2 or 3 days and with Samsung’s program you must mail in your device in a pre-paid mailer and wait for your repaired device to be returned to you.
