Mobile World Congress officially starts tomorrow, but starting today companies are already beginning to show off the new devices from they have coming out this year. HTC’s event was today and just as expected they ended up showing off the HTC One M9. The new flagship successor to the HTC One M8 has finally been unveiled, and although this is the first official showing of the device there have been more than enough leaks to give just enough away so people knew what to expect. That includes the outer body design as well as the inner hardware, both which have been leaked numerous times.
HTC said that they were inspired by premium watches when designing the M9, and that the One M9 features a two-tone, silver and gold finish that has never been seen before on a smartphone. The rear surface is brushed aluminum and the sides are polished to a gold color, all milled out of one solid block of aluminum.
The One M9 is indeed powered by the Snapdragon 810, the first octa-core CPU from Qualcomm, boasting transfer speeds of 450mbps. The rest of the device is powered by Sense 7, an evolution of the Sense 6 software platform that shipped with the One M8 last year. This time around, HTC is focusing on bringing all your cloud storage and social media networks together so sharing is easier than ever before. Sense 7 is also contextually aware this time around, knowing when you’re at home or at work, changing your homescreen and recommending new apps and nearby attractions, a la Aviate.
It seems just as many suspected, HTC didn’t stray too far from the design of last year’s model, however they did end up getting rid of the DuoCamera design and stuck with a single, higher megapixel camera on the back this time. Other than that, the device mostly looks pretty similar. As for the hardware, the HTC One M9 is coming equipped with a 5-inch 1080p LCD display, a 20-megapixel rear facing camera, a 4MP UltraPixel front facing camera which can take in up to 300% more light than regular imaging sensors and captures even more with its wide-angled lens. There’s 32GB of storage space with a micro SD card slot for expandable storage, 3GB of DDR4 RAM, Bluetooth 4.1 support, VoLTE and carrier aggregation support with compatibility for LTE Cat 6, dual BoomSound front facing stereo speakers, and a 2,840mAh battery. It’s also going to be available in three different colors, which includes the dark gunmetal on front and back, the gold front and back, and a model that’s gold on the front and silver on the back.
As for pricing and availability, we’re not sure how much the One M9 will cost, but we do know that it’ll be available starting mid-March in Asia Pacific, North America, Europe and EMEA regions. It’ll be available in four different colors at launch; Gunmetal Grey, Gold, Silver and Pink. We’ll have hands-on with the M9 shortly, so stay tuned and let us know what you think so far in the comments below.
