It’s been an exciting few hours, hasn’t it? And while many are discussing whether the Nexus 6 smart phone is too big and expensive, or proclaiming how sexy the HTC-built Nexus 9 tablet is, some of us are drooling over the $99 Nexus Player. Since Android TV was first announced, it’s been a waiting game to see just what Google were going to offer up. And now we know. One of the more obvious uses for the Nexus Player is for streaming media to your TV, and with this in mind, Plex has announced that it is bringing its media streaming app to Android TV.

What is Plex exactly? Basically, its software that allows you to stream your content (legal or otherwise) from your PC to virtually any electronic viewing device imaginable. You can watch your content on smartphones (Android/iOS/WP) and via Smart TV’s that have the Plex App baked in. You can also watch your content on devices such as the GoogleCast (ChromeCast), Roku, Apple TVor even the Xbox One gaming console. You can even watch your content on another PC or laptop, ChromeBook or MacBook if you so wish. Plex really have sprung up everywhere. And now, they have announced support for Android TV, with the Nexus Player being the first such device to benefit. Once you’ve got the obligatory Plex Media Server software running on your PC or NAS drive, its just a matter of installing the Plex app to whichever electronic device you wish to view your content on.
As you can see from the gallery of screenshots below, the Plex app for the Nexus Player looks polished, and in keeping with the Android TV design language. As a long-time Plex user, I have always been somewhat appalled by the aesthetics of the Plex app on the Roku, but this is somewhat better. The much improved design was something I first noticed a few days ago when Plex came to Xbox One, and if anything its been improved further still for the Nexus Player. The design language just looks so clean and uncluttered. You can probably tell, I’m more than a little enthused by both the Nexus Player and the way that the Plex app has been implemented. Now all we need is the actual Nexus Player to take advantage of it! Let us know your thoughts on the Plex app for the Android TV at our Google Plus page.
