One of the more popular sketch/paint/drawing programs has just released its newest version – Autodesk’s Sketchbook – and just like many new updates, there is now just one App for both smartphones and tablets. This was one of the first Apps I purchased after I got my Note 3 – it works great with the S-Pen, and although I have seen some unbelievable drawings come from Sketchbook done on the Note 3, I think it is really better suited for a tablet environment. Autodesk Sketchbook is truly a professional-grade paint and drawing application and the mobile version uses the same powerful paint engine as its desktop counterpart. You can do anything from a small doodle to a professional looking canvas – the only limitation is your imagination…and knowing how to properly use the application. The newest version has a streamlined UI and several new features and improvements – but it does have a certain learning curve. Thankfully, Autodesk includes a few tutorials on their website.
With Sketchbook, the entire screen is your canvas without any intrusive interface blocking you from your work. There are ten preset brushes (pencils, pens, markers), however, you can customize brushes – adjust radius, opacity, rotation and more. Zoom up to 2500-percent to work on the finest details, and when you are done you can store them in Sketchbook’s organized gallery. The advanced Pro Tools for an in-app purchase of $3.99, allow you to select from over 100 preset pencils, markers, pens and brushes. You can utilize full layer controls including grouping, multiple layer transform and layer blending modes. Advanced selection tools like the Lasso, Marquee or Magic Wand are also included.
When I first purchased my Autodesk Sketchbook, I paid $4.00 for the Pro version, but through its several updates, if I want to unlock all of the features, then I have to pay another $4.00 – not too happy about that. You can also pay $24.99 a year for a Pro Membership that will allow you to use the application across all platforms – Windows, Mac, iOS and Android devices. The $3.99 Pro upgrade for the mobile App will unlock – Gradient Fills, Double Puck, Selection Tools, Create Layers, Smudge & Synthetic and Copic Color Library. Please hook up with us on our Google+ Page and let us know if you use the Autodesk Sketchbook and how you like it – even post some drawings…as always, we would love to hear from you.
