Sony’s second flagship for the year was announced earlier this month over in Berlin, during IFA 2014 and now it’s available in the UK, with Vodafone one of the major networks to stock the two new phones. Both the Xperia Z3 and the Xperia Z3 Compact will be available from Vodafone on a range of different plans as well as in a variety of different colors, including the fetching new copper color for the Xperia Z3 and that eye-popping mandarin for the Z3 Compact. As is so often the case with Sony’s new devices and Vodafone, the two of them are offering something a little extra, but it might not be what you were expecting.
Starting with pricing, the Xperia Z3 will be available on a Red 4G plan for free from £43.50 a month and the Xperia Z3 Compact for £39.50. We’d have expected the Z3 Compact go for a little less than that, but it does still pack the same punch as its larger brother. If you’d rather spend less every month, you can get the Xperia Z3 for as little as £26.50 for 24 months, but this only comes with 100 minutes, 100MB of data and unlimited texts, which is frankly a bit of an insult for the upfront cost of £199. For £48.50 a month on the same contract length, you can get unlimited minutes and texts, but just 4GB of data, although the phone is free. The same is largely true for the Xperia Z3 Compact with the lowest price being £26.50 again per month with £199 for the phone. However, if you were to choose a Red 4G plan, you get 6-months free Netflix and then a choice of either 6-months of Spotify Premium or Sky Sports, of course with 4GB of data we don’t know how far that’s going to get you.
The special surprise that Sony and Vodafone have put together is a secret gig for fans of The Script, with 2,000 tickets up for grabs. There will be a pair of tickets given to the first 1,000 people who purchase a Sony Xperia Z3 or Z3 Compact, so if you’re a Script fan and you were looking for a new phone then this works out quite nicely. If not, at least you have a shiny new phone.
