It’s been an interesting first year for OnePlus and their first flagship device, the OnePlus One. The company has seen the best and worse of what the industry has to offer. This included rave reviews for the OnePlus One and also the wrath of both the public and the media with their repeated gaffs and attention-seeking promotions for invites. In spite of the One’s popularity and the fact that the device has not actually received a proper release yet it is no secret that their follow-up device, the OnePlus 2 is in the works. This has been readily rumored with OnePlus generally opting to keep quiet about the device and trying to keep the focus on the current One. That is until now as we can finally bring you some form of confirmation from OnePlus.
On reddit today two of the OnePlus folk held a short AMAA (Ask Me Almost Anything) session and during the back-and-forth finally advised that the OnePlus 2 is expected to land in Q2 or Q3 of 2015. This is generally what most people would have expected when taking into consideration the One is only about to receive a proper roll-out and release. With this in mind, the company would need time to release, sell, clear stock and prepare for the new unveiling. In their answer the OnePlus guys also clearly suggested the new device will come loaded with Android L (5.0) “OnePlus 2 should be out in Q2 or Q3 of 2015. By that time, I’d think Android L would be standard“. Another interesting point which came out during the Q&A was they are very much considering a smaller size for the OnePlus 2. The current One is phablet sized with the screen measuring 5.5”. In fairness it would be difficult for them to go much bigger and so it probably is a safe bet that the newer version will come in at a smaller form. “We’ve seen a lot of people asking for a smaller device, and want to let everyone know that we hear you. We’re thinking about it“. However, the big question you are probably all asking is if the OnePlus 2 will be ‘normally’ available at launch or will the dreaded invite system be back in effect? Well, here is the bad news (although these comments do not represent an official standpoint) the guys did highly suggest the OnePlus 2 will again employ the invite system. “It will probably be invite-only for a short period of time, after which pre-orders are rolled out“. Sorry guys. No good news in that respect.
So there you go. OnePlus 2 is (kind of) confirmed. We now know we can expect the follow-up sometime in the second or third quarter of 2015, it very well may be a smaller device and you probably will have to go through the invite system again.
