Google Play TV in Canada

Google Play Store Finally Offers TV Shows to Canadian Audience

June 3, 2014 - Written By Cory McNutt

Google is giving some more loving to Canada by offering Google Play TV shows in that country…and only a month after Canada was hooked up with Google Play Music All Access.  Canada is only the fifth country to have access to TV shows on Google Play – first was the U.S., followed by…UK, Australia and Japan. In order to save money, many of the American television series are actually shot in Canada – New York or Chicago could really be Toronto or Vancouver.  Supernatural is really chasing spirits around British Columbia and Hell on Wheels is filmed in Alberta – what makes it sad is that some of the best TV shows are filmed in their homeland, but could not even be watched by the Canadians…up until now.

Now that Google has okayed TV downloads, Canadians can now download their favorite TV shows (for the most part) to their favorite Android device, be it their smartphone or tablet – keeping in mind that data rates will apply.  You can also stream them to your PC, Mac, or Chromebook or even send them to your Big Screen using Chromecast.  Just keep in mind that not all shows will be available, depending on international publishing rights. If you look at the Canadian Play Store, most popular shows will be available to you, although not all will be there.  Google Play Store TV allows you to buy (not rent) television shows by the episode or by the season – a few of the more popular series are already for sale now and they offer specials as well…right now, popular shows like Scandal, Revenge and Mad Men and more are on “Great Pric(ing)” now.

This is good news for Canada as Google continues to expand outside the U.S. and grow around the world, especially to our northern neighbors. Canadian subscribers are starting to share in some things that we have taken as common everyday occurrences in the U.S. Please hit us up on our Google+ Page and let us know if you will be using Google Play TV to watch some of your TV shows in the future…as always, we would love to hear from you.
