Touch Combat

Sponsored Game Review: Touch Combat

April 19, 2014 - Written By Tom Dawson

Description: Touch Combat is a game for Android that puts you in the shoes of Dajie, and has you fight off demon after demon in order to be reunited with her lost love. Really though, the story is not what Touch Combat is all about. Instead, it’s the combat mechanics at the heart of the game which are, as you’ve probably guessed, solely based around touch. You swipe to move, swipe to jump, swipe to attach and swipe away to combat these crazy-looking demons that you’ve come across from chapter to chapter. Take a look at the video below to see what Touch Combat is all about.

How it Works: First of all, you’ll need to download Touch Combat from the Play Store, before you’re ready to play.

You’ll first start playing the Tutorial, which does a good job of explaining the controls to you, although some written prompts would be nice, but it’s perfectly simple enough to pickup in no time.

All you need to do to make an attack is simply tap either the right or left side of the display and tapping both sides of the display will change to your gun.

When playing through the levels, you have to defeat demons that are in your way, each time you do defeat a demon, you’re rewarded a percentage of your health back (provided you touch the blob they often leave behind).

Opinion: I really enjoyed playing Touch Combat, however I’m under no illusions that this is a perfect game. For one thing, the backgrounds are simply tiled repetitions and let the overall presentation down which is good thanks to some cool music, rain and Super Nintendo-like graphics. The touch controls are good overall, but could do with some tightening up and polishing. The story isn’t really here, but that didn’t bother me much at all, I was hooked on the combat, which didn’t hold me back and just let me have as much fun as I liked kicking demons into the air and slamming them back down. A fun game overall, Touch Combat is a work in progress, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Ratings

  • Speed (4/5) – Touch Combat ran well on a number of my devices, but the touch controls could be a little more responsive.
  • Features (4/5) – The core mechanics at work here are a lot of fun, but with little in the way of story or atmosphere, there’s work to be done.
  • Theme (3/5) – Touch Combat’s backgrounds really let everything else down here, which is a shame because otherwise, the game has a good look and feel to it.
  • Overall (4/5) – A work in progress, Touch Combat has the core mechanics down to a T, the combat here is different and a lot of fun. With updates to the menus and the backgrounds, Touch Combat will only get better and better.

Pros

  • Fresh and unique fighting controls make this a fun game to play on any size device.
  • No complicated onscreen control sticks or anything like that here.
  • Quirky graphics and funky music help give Touch Combat a fun appearance.
  • Integrates with Google Play Games.

Cons

  • Backgrounds really need some work as they just look a little strange, especially on tablets.
  • A better fleshed out story would help the game appeal to a wider audience.

Conclusion: Thanks to the fun combat controls, Touch Combat is a fun game that anyone will be able to play, but work needs to be made on adding some atmospheric backgrounds and filling up empty space in the menus. With a little polish, Touch Combat could become a very good game, indeed. As it stands though, the addictive combat controls and quirky appearance are compelling enough to keep players engaged for long periods of time and thanks to the small asking price there’s no need to worry about pesky ads or in-app purchases.
