Marvell Unveils The Chip That Does It All, The PXA1928

February 25, 2014 - Written By Justin Diaz

It’s Day Two of MWC, and most of the super exciting device news is over. That’s not to say that there isn’t anything left to be excited about. Today, a popular chip manufacturer called Marvell announced their newest offering into the chip market for device manufacturers, the Armada series PXA1928 chip, that basically does it all. The PXA1928 provides a one stop shop of sorts for manufacturers looking for a processor to build into devices, as this 64-bit chip includes the CPU, GPU, the LTA modem, and the multi-radio support in an all inclusive package. It seems that Marvell is looking to attack the mid-range device market with this chip, and they will likely be able to do so at a more inexpensive cost to their partners then competitors. If they can pull this off then they just might be able to expand and give Qualcomm a run for its money.

Since they are a strong partner with the likes of Lenovo, with the market looking to move more towards 64-bit chips and Motorola to soon be fully in Lenovo’s care, perhaps we could see some Moto phones with these types of chips in the future. We’re starting to see some of the smaller chip makers rise up and offer more competitive solutions. Companies like MediaTek, and Rockchip are also improving their low-cost chips to grab a bigger piece of the pie. It would do well to see some of these smaller chip makers to succeed and foster some competition. Here’s a breakdown of some of the PXA1928 chip that make it something worth while. The PXA1928 has support for 1080p display and 1080p video encoding and decoding, it supports multi-radio, CSFB, VoLTE voice solutions for LTE networks and houses the GC5000 GPU, that has full HD capacity, which serves to give devices the power to perform at high levels, but with less power consumption battery wise. It has complete wireless capabilities and supports WLAN, Bluetooth, and NFC, so nothing in the way of wireless connections gets left out. Overall, there are plenty of reasons why this chip should do well. Here is the entire press release of information from Marvell.
