GameStick Gets First Major Backing With Ubisoft’s Prince of Persia Franchise

December 5, 2013 - Written By Cory McNutt

PlayJam’s Gamestick, an Android-based game console, started off a year ago as a KickStarter project and quickly reached its $100,000 goal in only 30 hours, with 1,000 backers, and ended up with 5,691 backers and $647,658 to make their dream come true. However, Gamestick was plagued with several delays – initially pushed from April to June, then to August, then to September, and finally to November.  The idea and concept are great and the attractive $80 price tag, $20 cheaper than its rival, the Ouya console, only adds to its attractiveness, but if they cannot get them into the customer’s hands, then what good is the great price tag.

Just like any device, its chances of surviving are certainly in direct correlation with the number of games that are available for the platform, and GameStick is certainly no exception. However, they just got a big boost in that department as Ubisoft announced that they will bring over their popular Prince of Persia franchise, specifically The Shadow and the Flame. This is great news for both PlayJam and the GameStick owners, as this is the first major player to jump on the GameStick platform. PlayJam claims this is only the beginning as there are other major gaming houses coming out with games for the console, although no names were dropped.

PlayJam needs to get this device out and soon – the official GameStick site has it listed as pre-order for delivery by December 15 – just in time for the Christmas holidays. It will be a huge coup for PlayJam if they can get this out for the holidays when people tend to spend more money on non-essential items, such as GameStick, especially for only $80 it has all the makings of a potential money-maker if it finally arrives on time, in good working order, and with the backing of a few good gaming houses. GameStick is up against the new Xbox and PlayStation 4 released for the holidays, although it was never their intention to compete with the “big boys,” not at $80.

Let us know in the comments and on Google+ what you think of the new GameStick at only $80 – is this something that would interest you gamers out there?
