Google Maps 7.1 Now Available – Get your APK Here!

August 15, 2013 - Written By Alexander Maxham

Right now, Google is rolling out a new version of Google Maps. It’s sitting at version 7.1 now and we have an APK for you as well. Of course, the folks over at Android Police have torn down the APK as they always do. So what did they find? Well they have found quite a bit. Including 3D Buildings, Offline Cache Access for the Maps API, Bug  fixes, and More. So let’s jump in.

Back in version 6.12, there was a 3D button found. Now in version 7.1 there is some more text with some very descriptive text in the newest update:

<string name=”STRIPIFIED_MESH_LAB_NAME”>Detailed 3D Meshes</string>
<string name=”STRIPIFIED_MESH_LAB_DESCRIPTION”>Enable/disable visualization of detailed user-generated meshes for important buildings and monuments. The coverage of these buildings is sparse in most places. This is open for dogfood for all Android devices, but be warned that areas such as the Las Vegas Strip should be viewed by devices on par or better than the Nexus 4. There is a great deal of geometry that needs to be processed which makes map loading slow.</string>

Google also seems to be dogfooding a different version of Maps to their employees that allow them to test Google Earth-style 3D buildings. Google describes them as “important buildings and monuments.” So Google might not be using all the data from Earth.

Then there’s offline maps for third party apps. You can see that code down below:

<permission android:name=”com.google.android.apps.maps.permission.PREFETCH” android:protectionLevel=”signature” />

<uses-permission android:name=”com.google.android.apps.maps.permission.PREFETCH” />

<service android:name=”com.google.android.apps.gmm.background.MapWorkerService” android:permission=”com.google.android.apps.maps.permission.PREFETCH” android:exported=”true”>

<intent-filter>
<action android:name=”com.google.android.apps.maps.PREFETCH” />
</intent-filter>
</service>

That’s not all, there’s also some other minor changes. As you can see in the image down below the transit names are displayed has been changed. This new design shows you every stop.
