June 20, 2013 - Written By Alexander Maxham

On Thursday, Samsung officially announced three new members to the Galaxy S4 family. That is the Galaxy S4 Mini, Galaxy S4 Active and Galaxy S4 Zoom. In addition to the two variants of the Galaxy S4 already available. The Exynos 5 Octa Galaxy S4 and the Snapdragon 600 Galaxy S4. So which one is for you? Well we are going to share the specs of all the devices here for you so we can see which one is the better one for different use cases.

Galaxy S4 (Exynos 5 Octa and Snapdragon 600)

Galaxy S4 101

The Galaxy S4 was announced back in March and is available on almost every carrier right now. The Snapdragon 600 is the version we see here in the US, while the Exynos 5 Octa is what we see outside the US. Here are the specs for the Galaxy S4

  • 5-inch full HD AMOLED display
  • Exynos 5 Octa-core/Snapdragon 600 quad-core
  • 2GB of RAM
  • 16GB/32GB/64GB internal storage, microSD card slot
  • 13MP camera on the back and a 2MP on the front
  • 2600mAh battery
  • Android 4.2.2

The Galaxy S4 is for everyone. But what if you want a better camera? Or a waterproof phone? Or maybe a smaller phone? Well one of the other Galaxy S4 family members might be better.

Galaxy S4 Mini

The Galaxy S4 Mini is a smaller version of the Galaxy S4, with lower-end specs. It’s basically a mid-range device carrying the Galaxy S4 moniker.

  • 4.3-inch qHD Super AMOLED display, that’s 960×540 resolution
  • 1.5GB RAM on the 3G model, 2GB of RAM on the LTE model
  • 8GB of internal storage, with a microSD card slot
  • Snapdragon 400 dual-core processor
  • 8MP camera on the back, 1.9MP on the front.
  • 1900mAh battery
  • Android 4.2.2

For those of you that don’t want a “huge” device. This is probably the best one out there.

Galaxy S4 Active

The Galaxy S4 Active is actually shipping from AT&T right now here in the US. It’s Samsung’s waterproof and dust proof device, like the Xperia Z. It has most of the same specs as the Galaxy S4, but let’s check out those specs.

  • 5-inch 1920×1080 resolution Full HD TFT display
  • IP67 certified dust and water resistant
  • 2GB of RAM
  • 16GB internal storage, microSD card slot
  • Snapdragon 600 quad-core processor
  • 2600mAh battery
  • 8MP camera on the back and a 2MP on the front
  • Android 4.2.2

The Galaxy S4 Active is a great device for those that like to go swimming, play Sports, or just don’t want to worry about getting their phone wet. It can even take a fall into the toilet.

Galaxy S4 Zoom

The Galaxy S4 Zoom is what we like to call the child of the Galaxy S4 Mini and the Galaxy Camera. It’s the first smartphone with a 10x optical zoom and a 16MP camera. Which is pretty insane. Here are the specs.

  • 4.3-inch 960×540 resolution display, Super AMOLED
  • 8GB of internal space, microSD card supported
  • 1.5GB of RAM
  • Dual-core Cortex-A9 processor
  • 16MP camera on the back with a 10x optical zoom. 1.9MP on the front
  • 2330mAh battery
  • Android 4.2.2

For those that don’t want to carry a camera with them on vacation, the Galaxy S4 Zoom is probably the best way to go.

Final Thoughts

So there we have the Galaxy S4, Galaxy S4 Mini, Galaxy S4 Active and Galaxy S4 Zoom. All part of the Galaxy S4 family, which Samsung has now made official. Which one should you make your next device? Well if you don’t care about specs, screen size or the camera, I’d say the Galaxy S4 Active. As it is waterproof. Like we always say the choice is yours. But I’d stick with the original Galaxy S4 and just through the 7500mAh extended battery on it and I’m good to go!
