Admittedly, I’m just a little biased when it comes to the game that I’m about to talk about. I had the pleasure of generating story based content for the game. In other words, I helped make the game what it is today right alongside a very talented team of artists, programmers and designers. That being said, I think many of you would enjoy the game, and that’s one of the main reasons why I’m sharing it here.
Tales of Illyria is a unique episodic party-based RPG that simulates the experience of a traditional pen and paper role-playing game. What sets TOI apart from other games, is the unique gameplay and turn based mechanics. One of our main sources of inspiration when we designed the game was Oregon Trail. Like Oregon Trail, you are on an epic journey, and you must manage all aspects of your party, right down to the supplies you carry. Unfortunately, just comparing the game to Oregon Trail is inaccurate, and so was our original idea to compare the game to the Choose Your Own Adventure series.
Tales of Illyria is really something new, something fresh, yet it borrows elements from a lot of old school titles. Keep in mind, the game is very text heavy. Although, a lot of the screenshots do show off combat based gameplay, the entirety of the story and unique events that unfold are told through text based message boxes.
I promise it’s a lot more fun than it sounds. This is actually one of the very first games I’ve ever played on my mobile device that has continuously kept me coming back. With a lot of mobile games, I just end up installing them, playing them for a bit and then tossing them to the side. Of course, my personal investment will likely be considered the reason for my infatuation with the game so that is where you come in.
Give the game a try. If you’re not into turn based RPGs then you probably won’t like Tales of Illyria so please just take that into consideration before tossing up a negative review.
