This weekend we are seeing what appears to be confirming the Babel name for Google’s new unified chat service coming at Google I/O. We’ve heard the unified chat client called Babble and Babel. It now looks like it will be Babel. A Google+ user, Patric Dhawaan, noticed it in a pop up when he was pruning his inbox today. Which you can see that pop up in the image below.
So it looks like Babel is coming soon, and might have been in testing this weekend. It also looks like it’ll be integrated through everything, including Gmail, Google+, and every other app on every platform we use. Employees have been told about a few features which include:
- Access the same conversation list from anywhere
- A new, conversation-based UI
- Advanced group conversations
- Ability to send pictures
- Improved notifications across devices
Now there’s another part of this story which comes from a YouTube employee by the name of Eileen Rivera. She posted up a screenshot of the new Google Play 4.0, which we showed off a few weeks ago. You can check out the screenshot which is pictured below, there is a Play Store icon with a dog dish and bone inside, a clear sign that they are dogfooding this to employees only at this point. She didn’t post any other details. But it’s interesting
We don’t know specifically that we’ll see this at Google I/O, but it sounds pretty likely since it’s being tested with Google employees right now. And it also looks like it will be Google Babel and not Babble. So with that being said, how many of you are excited to check out Google Babel when it goes official? Remember Google I/O is about 5 weeks away now.
