ZTE to Launch Firefox OS Smartphone at MWC

ZTE recently sent this invitation to several major media outlets for its press conference at MWC 2013. The event is scheduled for February 25th at 4pm and while most OEMs are working furiously to keep their big news under wraps until the official announcement, ZTE doesn’t seem to have any hangups about giving us a pretty good idea of what to expect.

ZTE – Life is Grand
Mobile Devices Global Media Launch – MWC 2013

ZTE would like to invite you to the announcement of two major new mobile devices at MWC 2013. To whet your appetite – the hashtags for the announcements will be:

#ZTEGrandMemo
#ZTEMozilla

We previously discussed the ZTE Grand Memo. We are expecting the specs to be:

  • 5.7-inch 1280 x 720 LCD Display
  • 1.7 Ghz Quad-Core Snapdragon S4 Pro
  • 2GB of RAM
  • 13 MP Camera
  • microSD card slot
  • Android 4.1.2
  • 8mm thick

This device is certainly worth a look, especially if it turns out to have fantastic battery life like the Galaxy Note 2.  It’s also great to see more and more devices launching with the Snapdragon S4 Pro, so hopefully the Grand Memo will be a snappy, powerful device.

This press invite also confirms what most of us have suspected for a while now: ZTE will be launching a Firefox OS based smart phone this year. We got a sneak peek at Firefox Mobile OS at CES 2013, but now that we will have devices actually out in the wild running this new OS, we will get to see how it actually measures up to its competitors. The obvious question is what apps will it run? We will almost certainly see the obvious: Facebook, web browser, music player, picture and video players as well as several other basic features. But how many news readers will we see? What about banking apps? Will developers get on board with yet another mobile OS, or will they continue to focus on iOS and Android almost exclusively? We expect to get many of these questions answered over the next few weeks, but what apps would Firefox OS absolutely have to run in order for you to consider switching?
