Ingress Receives a Major Update, Bumping it to Version 1.18.1

January 17, 2013 - Written By Alexander Maxham

Today, the popular augmented reality game Ingress got a huge update. I know a lot of people have given up on the game based on how hard it is to get an invite into the closed beta game. It is quite an addicting game, but it’s a bit heavy on the data usage and space sides. Ingress is a 20MB download and it uses quite a bit of data. So if you’re not on unlimited data, you might not be able to play as much. Ingress is also pretty battery intensive. But it is using your GPS, Screen and mobile data all at the same time. So I can’t say that I’m surprised.

So what kind of new features and bug fixes did Ingress receive today? Well it received quite a bit of UI enhancements and bug fixes. Here’s the full changelog for v1.18.1:

What’s in this version:

Version 1.18.1
* Many bug fixes.
* Improved XMP explosion animation.
* Improved memory usage.
* Various UI enhancements.
* Faster app resume on all Adreno GPU based devices.
* Improved performance.
Known issues:
* Portal shields are nearly invisible in the map view.

I played with the updated version a bit today, and you can really tell that this was a huge update. The amount of lag when playing has been reduced, as usual with every update. Ingress was also missing out on some animation in game play, but it looks like this update has brought in some of that eye candy, that we gamers, love.

If you don’t already have an invite, make sure you enter our Ingress Invite Giveaway. It’s ending this Sunday, January 20th. I know you’re thinking “there’s no way I can win” well that’s only true if you don’t enter. There’s truly no harm in entering the contest.

Has anyone else noticed some big time changes to the game in today’s update? Let us know in the comments below.
