Even though most people remember the iPad as being the first to create this tablet/pad market in the recent months, Archos had a tablet out there since fall last year. I’m not saying it impressed much, but they had one out.
Now, they are going to launch 5 new tablets starting at under $100, and from 2.8″ to 10.1″ screen sizes. What I don’t like, though, is their naming strategy. They are going to call them: Archos 28, 32, 43, 70 and 101. While these names make some kind of sense because they relate to the screen sizes (28 is 2.8″, 32 is 3.2″, etc), the names suggest that every tablet is just one more product in a series of products. This makes it feel like the products are not very unique.
It’s no coincidence that HTC, Motorola, Samsung and even LG have started to give their high-end products names that don’t contain numbers and make the products unique. Consumers want to identify with the product they buy, and they want to identify with a name – not with a number. Hopefully, Archos will get it right eventually because haven’t hit a home run with any of their previous tablets before.
