Poynt: Helping you Find Everything around Town – An Android App Review

August 6, 2010 - Written By Chris Yackulic

App Name: Poynt by Multiplied Media

Description: Get Reviews. Get Reservations. Get Directions. Get Trailers. Get Listings. Get Tickets. Get There.  Poynt helps you find restaurants, movies, gas stations, other business locations, people and even the local weather.

How it works: When you open Poynt, you are immediately greeted with the current temperature an conditions, along with merry-go-round-like interface consisting of five choices: Restaurants, Businesses, People, Movies and Gas.  You can move the choices left or right with a swipe of your finger, or by using your trackball if you have one, and then simply tapping on your choice.

The Restaurants search gives you three ways to satisfy your appetite.  Search by restaurants nearby, by cuisine or by name. You can even reserve a table using OpenTable or read review via CitySearch.

Business search allows you to search by typing or using voice to text.

Poynt’s People search not only lets you search by name, but also allows two forms of reverse lookup: by phone number and by address.

Want to see a movie?  You can search by theater or movie title, see what’s in the Top-10, watch a trailer, explore by genre or simply type or speak the name.

If you’re looking for a gas station, you can use the Poynt’s Gas search to find the closest one or the cheapest.  You can even search by type of gas: regular, mid-grade, premium, diesel, etc.

Other features of Poynt include the ability to add phone numbers to your contacts, get directions or GPS navigation via Google Maps and even view business websites.

Opinion: Poynt is a very handy, quick and easy to use application.  I found it quite intuitive and easy to learn.  Features like the people search with reverse lookup, current weather, voice to text search and making restaurant reservations set it apart from similar apps.

However, I could not help but notice that the ability to search for coffee shops, bars or pubs is missing — a common feature in many other like apps.   I also found some bad website links and every time I tried using the OpenTable feature, I was met with a bad link error.

Ratings :

  • Speed (4/5) –   Very quick and snappy
  • Features (3/5) –  Nice features but missing some basic ones
  • Theme (4/5) –  The signals bars/pointing hand icon is clever and the current weather background a very nice touch.
  • Overall (4/5) –  A very good app.

Pro: Easy to use, quick, unique features, nice look

Cons: Missing some basic stuff like where to get a good cup of coffee, links need work

Conclusion: I very good and handy little app I can see myself using over and over again.  It will definitely be staying on my phone.
