Goby Helps You Find Something to Do With Your Time

July 15, 2010 - Written By c.alexander

Ever wake up on a Saturday morning expecting an exciting agenda throughout the day? Did you then realize that you really had nothing to do and stayed cooped up in the house as bored as you’ve ever been? Goby’s hoping to change that with the launch of their new application headed for the Android market.

At first glance, this sounds like your standard “what restaurants are around me?” app, but it’s aspiring to be so much more. They’re housing over 350 categories of activities and claims that – through the help of their users – they’ve found and cataloged everything that you can do in every city, town, and region in this country. That’s a pretty bold claim.

“Goby’s mobile apps empower users to find fun anytime, anywhere using their mobile devices,” said Watkins. “We launched Goby with the goal of helping people find new experiences and inspiring them to try new things. We’re also in the process of adding more features to all of our mobile apps to allow people to create, edit and share goby content. You can preview these new features on goby.com where users already have the ability to save, organize and share all the things to do they find across the site.”

I’ve taken a quick look at their site, and they pretty much have a crap-ton of things you can do. Wanting to go whale watching? They drill that deep with their specificity. This isn’t to say you’ll find everything within your area: some cities just don’t have what you’re looking for (don’t expect to go whale watching in Nevada), but it’s a pretty good starting point if you want to explore your area like you never have before. Full press details are just below.

GOBY COMES TO ANDROID, CURES BOREDOM YET AGAIN
Popular Free Travel Planning App Brings Things-to-Do Search Engine to More Mobile User’s Fingertips

BOSTON – July 14, 2010 – Goby.com (pronounced GO-be), the activity search engine that helps people find things to do with their free time, is expanding its portfolio of mobile offerings with the launch of its free Android app. Available for download in the Android Marketplace, goby’s Android app follows the recent successful launches of similar versions for the iPhone, iPad and iTouch.

“Given goby’s depth of content, mobile is a perfect platform. We’ve got more than four million things to do, all geo-tagged and easily searchable by location,” said Mark Watkins, CEO and co-founder of goby. “That means wherever you go, wherever you want to go, goby can cure your boredom on the spot.”

The goby Android App includes:
Coverage of 350 categories of things to do, from hiking and caving to restaurants and galleries
Coverage of every city, town and region in the United States
User geo-location at start
Result lists complete with photos
Maps and phone numbers to connect users to activities and places
Ability to share things to do through Twitter, Facebook and email

The Android app allows users to quickly find nearby activities and events, make weekend plans or explore a new location in just three taps. Once users select the desired activity from goby’s search results, a single tap will highlight specific details about that activity such complete descriptions, reviews and photos. One more tap lets users share activities via social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, creating an easy way to share plans and recommendations with family and friends.

“Goby’s mobile apps empower users to find fun anytime, anywhere using their mobile devices,” said Watkins. “We launched Goby with the goal of helping people find new experiences and inspiring them to try new things.
